Implementing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in Challenging Situations

Almost 3 weeks ago, I traveled to Canton, Ohio to present a professional development on implementing PLCs at a small Catholic school. This particular school doesn’t have a collaborative time for teachers factored into their master schedule. They also don’t have common prep periods for grade level teams on a consistent basis or an administrator or teacher leader to oversee PLCs. So I just left because how was I supposed to help them?

Just kidding! One of the best parts of presenting in-person professional development is having the opportunity to ask questions and brainstorm with staff, and that’s exactly what we did! We may not have solved all of their problems that day, but we did come up with some excellent outside-the-box strategies to help them implement PLCs DESPITE the challenges they were facing.

After I returned home, I got to thinking that there are probably quite a few schools out there who either don’t do PLCs or aren’t doing them very effectively. This could be due to a variety of reasons. So I decided to take the presentation I created for the Canton school and add audio to it so that it could be shared with other schools. While it may not be the same as me presenting in-person, I think it’s the next best thing. I still get the chance to talk through my ideas and experiences to help teachers and leaders get PLCs off the ground in their buildings. If you’re interested in the audio presentation (think of it as a webinar), click here.

If that’s not exciting enough, I’ve also been working on writing an ebook that details all of the information in the presentation plus so much more. It will be published and available on Smashwords by the end of September!

Stay tuned for lots more updates! And if you’re interested in having me come present at your school on this topic (or another), click the contact me link above. I’d love to chat!
