Frequently Asked Questions

What trainings do you provide?

I provide a variety of trainings for educators and parents on trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning, including mindfulness and de-escalation strategies and building trauma-informed classrooms and schools. A comprehensive listing of workshops for schools and parents/caregivers, including the most popular workshops currently, can be found on the Products & Services page.

Are your trainings customizable?

Absolutely! Every training is customized to the client’s specific school environment, needs and budget. My goal is to make your training fit exactly what YOU need and want.

How long are your trainings?

Trainings can be done in a 2 hour, abridged format or longer, more comprehensive 4-6 hour or multi-day formats. Many schools opt to break down the content into shorter, 1-2 hour chunks that are presented during their weekly, bi-weekly or monthly staff meeting time.

To put it into perspective, a 6 hour training could include the following components:

  • What trauma is
  • The characteristics of trauma at various ages
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences
  • Why schools should be trauma-informed
  • How trauma impacts the brain, learning and behavior
  • Trauma-informed discipline
  • 10 strategies for teachers to build a trauma-informed classroom

In what format are your trainings done?

Trainings are available in-person and via Zoom.

Do you offer professional development on topics other than trauma-informed practices?

I do! As a long-time educator and school administrator, I have a vast array of knowledge on, and passion for, topics such as multi-sensory reading instruction, writing instruction, leadership best practices and instructional coaching. I’ve also developed trainings (and published a book!) on how to effectively implement Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). I’m always happy to discuss your professional development needs!

Can your trainings be paid for with Title and other federal funds?

Yes! Most schools I work with use Title I, ESSER/CARES and other federal dollars to cover the cost of my trainings. Contact me for more information on this and/or for specific pricing.

What is a Certified Trauma and Resilience Specialist?

A CTPS is someone who has undergone extensive training in a variety of areas related to trauma, including: the impact of stress and trauma on learning; the social, emotional and physical development of children; the importance of resilience to future outcomes; and strategies for developing a strong, safe learning environment for students.

As a CPTS, I am required to participate in continuing education in order to keep my certification current.

Why is it important for schools to be trauma-informed and trauma-responsive?

I am so passionate about this work because I believe that schools should be safe havens for our kids – places where they are cared for, understood and loved, places where they feel they belong, places of peace rather than chaos.

I believe our schools are catalysts for change in our society, and this change begins by understanding the profound effects of stress and trauma on the human brain and development. Once we have a solid understanding of the challenges faced by our children and their caregivers, we can design school environments, curriculum and behavior policies that support and meet the needs of students in the most effective ways possible.

I believe every single student in every single school is deserving of these things, and I possess the expertise and skills to help you make this happen in your building.
